Pop-up Shop - Marcel Rodrigues

Written by Nat Louis

A long list of happy coincidences led to Marcel Rodrigues setting up shop just outside of Newquay near Bedruthan Hotel. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Marcel moved to Portugal at a young age and found a natural connection with the ocean and seaside living.

Later, living in the UK and with a passion for fashionable menswear, Marcel took on a role as an apprentice tailor on Saville Row. When the opportunity later presented itself for Marcel to buy out one of the oldest tailors on Saville Row, he turned it down as it would mean being in direct competition with one of his best friends.

Marcel chose to instead self-train in the art of creating completely bespoke hats, designed with luxury and sustainability at the forefront. From supply chains right through to the finished article, Marcel creates products that are designed to last a lifetime without leaving a negative impact on the environment.

Processes include only using pelts which would otherwise have been discarded as a by- product from the meat, leather and fur industries. With views to become certified as a ‘B-Corp’ in the next year, the workshop set up in Nansledan operates using only renewable energy.

Speaking passionately about sustainability, Marcel encourages his customers to bring back his clothing and hats if they have worn out to be repaired, which gives the garments a new lease of life and helps consumers contribute to sustainable fashion practices.

Marcel remains very much at the heart of his brand, with a small number of seamstresses and two part time apprentices supporting him in providing completely bespoke, hand crafted and luxury goods.

Throughout July, you can find Marcel’s shop in pop-up form at Bedruthan Hotel. His eye-catching hats and menswear look perfectly placed on both the rugged beaches of north Cornwall as well as a shop window on Saville Row. Please feel welcome to pop in for a chat and have a browse of the simple and stylish homewares that go alongside his collection.
