The arrival of a new year often sparks a desire for renewal—setting ambitious goals, creating new routines, and striving for growth. Yet, the pressure to begin as we mean to go on can feel overwhelming, leaving us discouraged when we struggle to meet the expectations, we've set for ourselves.
We took some time to speak to our spa team about simple yet gentle ways to approach a new year, focusing on our physical and mental wellbeing without placing too much pressure on ourselves.
Sleep
It may sound simple but getting enough sleep each night is vital for both health and happiness. Interestingly, the secret to a good night's sleep begins the moment you wake up.
Exposing yourself to natural sunlight shortly after waking kickstarts a process that supports better sleep at night. Morning light resets your body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm, helping align your sleep and wake patterns more naturally.
Sunlight suppresses melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel drowsy, and boosts serotonin, the hormone responsible for lifting your mood. This combination enhances your energy and productivity throughout the day, setting you up for restful sleep.
Spending just 20–30 minutes in natural light each morning can noticeably improve your mood, sleep quality, and daily performance.
Being Present
In a world full of distractions, staying present can feel like a challenge, even when we’re surrounded by loved ones. Mindfulness, however, doesn’t have to be complicated. Small practices can help you cultivate presence in your daily life.
One simple method is to use your non-dominant hand for routine tasks, like brushing your teeth. The unfamiliar sensation forces you to focus, quieting your mind and slowing the usual rush of thoughts.
Another powerful technique is walking barefoot, a practice that connects you to the earth in a literal and symbolic way. Feeling the ground beneath your feet makes you aware of each step, how your heel strikes the ground, the way your stride feels, and the texture of the surface. This grounding experience naturally brings your focus to the present moment, reducing stress and distractions.
Laughter
They say laughter is the best medicine, and for good reason. Laughing with friends or loved ones triggers the release of dopamine, a feel-good chemical that reduces stress and boosts your mood. This creates a positive cycle of happiness and connection.
If laughter doesn’t come easily, here are a few ideas to bring more joy into your routine:
Watch comedy: Find a show, movie, or comedian that makes you laugh, and share it with friends or family.
Embrace humour in daily life: Look for the lighter side of situations, even those that might initially seem frustrating or negative.
Share laughter with others: Reminiscing with friends about funny memories amplifies the emotional and social benefits of laughter.
Beginner's Mind
The concept of a beginner’s mind, rooted in Zen Buddhism, invites us to approach life with curiosity and openness, free from judgment or preconceptions. This mindset fosters personal growth and helps us appreciate life’s journey.
Here’s how you can nurture a beginner’s mind:
Prioritise curiosity over certainty: Instead of rushing to find answers, take time to ask thoughtful questions. Embrace the process of exploration, allowing yourself to be intrigued by what you don’t yet know.
Release preconceptions: Approach situations and people with an open mind. By letting go of assumptions, you may uncover unexpected insights and perspectives that enrich your experience.
Embrace humility: Recognise that no matter how much you know, there’s always more to learn. This openness creates room for growth and encourages deeper understanding.
Savour the journey, not just the destination: Much like a child captivated by the smallest wonders, pause to notice the details around you. Whether it’s the feeling of sand beneath your feet on a beach walk or the sound of birdsong on a quiet morning, allow yourself to fully experience the present moment.
Be open to mistakes: A beginner’s mind views missteps as opportunities to learn and grow. Instead of fearing failure, see it as a natural part of discovery.
By adopting this perspective, you can find joy in life’s simplest moments, rekindle your sense of wonder, and open the door to endless possibilities.
