Indian Summer in Cornwall

One of our best kept secrets here in Cornwall is our Indian Summers.

While the rest of the UK kisses its good weather goodbye come September, the Gulf Stream – that powerful Atlantic current that wafts sunshine our way from the Gulf of Mexico – keeps Cornwall summery well into October. Sometimes, even November. And that means you can enjoy all Cornwall’s Summer loveliness in blissful peace and quiet, long after the start of the school term has forced most holidaymakers home.

So, here are our top picks of things to do in Cornwall in late Summer:

The Big Autumn Food Market
3rd & 4th September
Experience Cornwall’s flourishing food and drink scene at Truro’s Weekend Market, where you’ll find an eclectic mix of mouth-watering food to sample, buy and eat and lots of chef’s demos. Expect a huge variety and choice of high quality produce in a relaxed, continental atmosphere. The Market is open on both Friday and Saturday from 9am to 4pm.

The Little Orchard Cider & Music Festival
9th – 11th September
Great music and great cider. The BBC Introducing stage will host some of the greatest up and coming local acts for its third year. The Little Orchard is set to be a party to remember, and a great event for all the family. Throughout the weekend, visitors will be able to sample a handpicked selection of more than 100 ciders, and also take part in circus workshops, attend guest speaker talks on brewing, and enjoy the wide range of festival food treats on offer. Tickets start at £15 for a day ticket on Friday or Sunday.

Eden’s Festival of Food
9th – 11th September
Eden’s Festival of Food returns with a packed three-day programme celebrating the best on offer in food and drink. Be inspired by the secrets of top celebrity chefs, and sample some delicious wares from our selection of specialist suppliers. Entry is included in the normal Eden admission prices.

Newquay Fish Festival
16th – 18th September
Come and see top chefs demonstrating all sorts of fish preparation and cooking techniques. There will be a stunning performance from the Oll en Gwella choir, the Blue Reef Rockpool Roadshow, a demo by the Old Ale House in Truro, before Friday comes to a sensational crescendo with the Last Night of the Proms at 7pm. This is a one night spectacle, during which the Mount Charles Band brings all of the pomp of the Royal Albert Hall to Newquay Harbour.

Cornwall Food and Drink Festival
23rd – 25th September
Truro’s Lemon Quay becomes foodie heaven for three days of eating, drinking, shopping and entertainment as the festival celebrates the food revolution that has taken place in Cornwall over the past 12 years. Demonstrating just why the county’s thriving food scene is loved by food connoisseurs from far and wide, this is one food event not to be missed.

Eden’s Beer Festival
1st October
The Eden Project’s annual beer festival offers a selection of great brews, great food and great live music. You can enjoy a variety of beers from all over the UK, as well as a selection of tipples from elsewhere in the world.Highlights from the beer selection include Black Flag Naughty Pilchard, Hunter’s Crispy Pig, Cheddar Ales Totty Pot, Glastonbury Ales Hedge Monkey and Stonehenge Pigswill. Live music will be playing throughout the evening, courtesy of Land of the Giants, The Sum Of and the People’s String Foundation Trio.

Falmouth Oyster Festival
13th – 16th October
Celebrate the start of the oyster dredging season, the diversity and quality of Cornish seafood and, in particular, the last remaining traditional oyster fishery in Europe still dredging by sail and hand punt. There will be celebrity chefs offering cookery masterclasses, tastings of oysters, wines, ales and other local produce, live music, a shucking competition and more.
