How to homemake a beautiful Mother’s day posy

Photographs by Darren Platt Photography

Impassioned floral stylist Charlotte Jenkins is the blossomy genius behind Rock ‘n’ Rosie, a Cornwall-based florist. The self-confessed colour magpie specialises in eye-popping, naturalistic creations that mix sweet nostalgia with an edgy, modern twist. Here’s Charlotte’s blooming brilliant Mother’s Day gift idea – a how-to guide to creating your own Mother’s Day posy.

You will need:

  • Narcissi
  • Hellebore
  • Green Iris
  • Ranunculus
  • Snowdrops
  • Alstroemeria
  • Cherry blossom
  • Camellia

Materials: Florist scissors, ribbon to decorate, small vintage vase (if your mum has a favourite then perhaps purloin that one – just make sure you don’t drop it!)

Step one:
Begin by adorning your chosen vessel with a little ribbon decoration. I’ve opted for velvet in a rich plum colour to complement the flowers. Make sure your stems are clean and stripped of any excess leaves. First add the cherry blossom and a little of the foliage so they rest at the rim of your vase, creating a structured base for the rest of your arrangement.

Step two:

Next, trim the stems of the camellia and hellebores and position them in a cluster at the front of the vase to form a focal point. Keep one camellia stem taller than the rest and place it at the back of your cluster to add height.

Step three:

Gradually add more height and colour with the ranunculus. Trim their stems and place two into your cluster at the front of the vase, one standing tall at the back of the arrangement and the remainder following the lines of the cherry blossom. Trim and add one stem of alstroemeria to the left to fill out and balance the colour in your arrangement.

Step four:

Finally trim and add the green iris followed by the snowdrops and narcissi making sure you fill any gaps evenly. And there you have it…a gorgeous garden inspired spring arrangement for Mother’s Day.
