The performing arts has a rich and varied history in Cornwall – from the stunning spectacle of the Minack theatre to the groundbreaking work of Kneehigh. The summer season of theatre will soon be upon us, so we wanted to put a spotlight on some of our favourite Cornish theatre companies and venues not to be missed.
Kneehigh have a big reputation locally, nationally and internationally. Based in breathtaking barns in Cornwall, they create theatre about humanity on an epic and tiny scale. They work with an ever-changing ensemble of performers, artists and musicians, and run Kneehigh Rambles, which aims to engage with communities in Cornwall and beyond through events and adventure. This June look out for performances of Tristan & Yseult at the Minack Theatre.
Wildworks makes theatre with landscapes and people, telling stories in unexpected ways. They bed down in every location, get to know the people and tease out the secrets that will shape each show. From the Rainforest Biome at the Eden Project to a castle in Belgium, Wildworks travel the world turning locations into a stage inviting people to come and wonder. This July they will be performing Wolf’s Child at Trelowarren Estate, a story for all the senses, which stirs the soul and explores the very essence of being human.
Bash Street Theatre Company
Bash Street is a small independent theatre company founded by partners, Simon Pullum and JoJo Pickering. They now perform with their two sons, Finbar and Lochlann, and their niece, Kesha, making the company very much a ‘family affair’. Based in Penzance they have built an international reputation performing silent-comedy street theatre shows with live musical accompaniment. Bash Street are currently performing their brand-new outdoor and family-friendly show Bellevue Hotel. Keep an eye on their social media channels for regular updates on performances.
Miracle produces a rich-mix of touring theatre from new writing to popular adaptations of classic plays. Miracle pops up in unexpected places and they are able to adapt to venues of all shapes and sizes from amphitheatres to castles. Their work is always entertaining, innovative and unpretentious. Their projects are also collaborative bringing together creatives from all over Cornwall. This year’s performance, a surreal, comic adventure written by Irish writer, Flann O’Brien, tours a number of unique outdoor locations, including our own Bedruthan sea view lawn.
Illyria is an award-winning theatre company that creates top quality open-air theatre at stunning locations throughout the UK and beyond. Their mission is to create a varied programme of outstandingly enjoyable theatre and to make it available for everyone to see. They produce performances from reworks of classics to Shakespeare and their shows are fun for all of the family. This season Illyria are touring the timeless Hans Christian Andersen Story: The Emperor’s New Clothes, a cheeky performance for all the family, and this year we’re lucky enough to be the venue for two performances throughout August.
Rogue Theatre creates daring high quality theatre, events and immersive experiences that are widely accessible and deeply engaging. They produce a range of projects including late night cabaret shows, festival projects, music events, young people’s performance events/projects, and of course theatre. Their theatre shows mix entertainment and spectacle with pathos and powerful narrative whilst sharing the same vein of wreckless celebration, which runs through all of our work. Keep an eye on Rogue Theatre’s social media channels for updates on their latest shows.
The Minack Theatre is one of the world’s most famous outdoor theatres, which has been perched on the cliffs high above the Atlantic Ocean for over 80 years. The theatre opens in the summer with a programme of theatre, music, comedy and story telling, but is open all year round to explore and learn about the incredible story of Rowena Cade who created the theatre.
The Hall for Cornwall
The Hall for Cornwall is a major theatre venue in Truro and is the county’s largest performance venue. They deliver a wide-ranging programme that includes theatre, comedy, West End musicals, opera, ballet and much more. Their mission, putting a world of arts on Cornwall’s stage, drives both the business and their staff in generating arts opportunities for creative communities in Cornwall.
Every year we work with award winning theatre companies to perform on our stunning sea view lawn for a summer of open-air theatre.
