Cornish Christmas Highlights 2017

By October 27, 2017Outdoors, Things to do

Christmas in Cornwall is truly magical, seeped in tradition and festive spirit, the Cornish really know how to celebrate. With enormous lantern processions paraded through the towns, whole villages filled with twinkly lights and fishing villages hosting delicious foodie festivals, there is so much to enjoy.

Here are our highlights of events running throughout the festive season all over Cornwall…

Eden’s Winter Festival, October 2017 – 18th February 2018
For truly unique, festive experiences head to the Eden Project. From October through to February there are all sorts of magical adventures to be had. You can go for a skate on the glittering ice rink – there are sessions available for all ages to enjoy and you can warm up after with gourmet burgers and crepes in the ice cafe. Little ones can meet Father Christmas and his elves getting a sneak preview into his Christmas workshop before settling down for a story by the open fire. Between 25th November and 30th December between 5-8pm experience the dazzling Festival of Light and Sound where Eden’s winter landscape is transformed with light projections, dramatic soundscapes and live music – it really shouldn’t be missed. And if that wasn’t enough, there is plenty of seasonal food, festive plant displays and you can even do a spot of Christmas shopping in the Eden shop.

Truro City of Lights, Wednesday 22nd November 2017 at 7pm
One of our favourite festive celebrations which really signals that Christmas preparations are underway in Cornwall is Truro City of Lights. A really spectacular display of enormous and intricate lanterns that are paraded through the streets of the cathedral city. Each year there is a different theme and new lanterns are produced by local artists working with school children, college students and community members. With over 600 atmospheric lit lanterns, live music and dancers all culminating on the beautiful light switch on – it’s a really popular event. To really make the most of it, we’d recommend picking a quieter place so you can get a really great view such as at the top of Lemon Street or River Street. There are also lots of street food to enjoy and plenty of warming mugs of mulled wine!

Bedruthan’s Christmas Craft Fair, Saturday 25th – Sunday 26th November 10am – 4pm
Another brazen recommendation from ourselves! There are a number of wonderful Christmas Craft Fairs held throughout the county which are a wonderful way to support local arts and crafts people, whilst buying your loved ones really unique, handcrafted gifts they’ll love, and we are proud to be amongst them. Our Christmas Craft Fair is held throughout one weekend is the warmth and cosy comfort of the hotel’s surroundings. Featuring over 50 stalls of contemporary craft, art, ceramics, illustration, homewares, textiles, fashion, food and drink – there really is something for everyone. This year we’ll also be offering drop-in workshops so you can be creative yourself!

Sugar and Spice Grotto, 1st – 24th December 2017
We may be a little biased, but another highlight on the festive calendar for families has to be a visit to Father Christmas’s grotto, and our Sugar and Spice Christmas Grotto this year is the best yet. Begin in our new Snow Zone making snow angels and throwing snowballs whilst getting a photo with Tomte and watching our festive film. Then wind your way to the Grotto through the snow-laden branches of the Winter Wood, meet the Piskies and hunt for magic stars. Get crafty and make a name badge for yourself and make a wish to hang on the wishing tree, before pulling up a toadstool to meet Father Christmas himself and receive a small gift. Finally, head back to the Christmas workshop to make a pottery decoration to take home with you – a lovely memento of your grotto experience.

Angarrack Christmas Lights, Saturday 2nd December 2017 – Friday 5th January 2018
Another charmingly small village with a huge reputation for magical light displays is tiny Angarrack near Hayle where they animate the 12 Days of Christmas above the rooftops and even in the streams: from twelve drummers drumming to the partridge in a pear tree.

Mousehole Christmas Lights, 16th December 2017 – 6th January 2018
One of the most unique and atmospheric festive experiences which still holds all its harbourside charm despite attracting thousands of people each year. Found at the easterly tip of Cornwall, the long journey really is worth it when you see all of the traditional light displays reflected in the harbour water. With a history dating back to 1963, some of the beautiful designs have lasted generations, with new designs being added throughout the years. The whole town is really involved, and you can wander through the tiny back streets discovering new light displays and tiny decorations in cottage windows.

Padstow Christmas Festival, Thursday 7th – Sunday 10th December 2017
Food has got to be one of the most important aspects of Christmas, and the Cornish really know good food. To really get a taste of some of the most talented food and drink producers throughout the South West, Padstow Christmas Festival is a must-see and do. Featuring a full timetable of demonstrations from ground-breaking chefs throughout the South West, a Christmas market of stall holders offering delicious tasters and a chance to buy gifts and goodies for your Christmas table and a host of pop-up stalls if you’re still peckish – you can really make a day of it. It’s also a great chance to see Padstow with its full display of festive lights.

Fowey Christmas Market, Friday 24th November – Sunday 26th November 2017
Fowey must be one of our favourite seaside market towns with a number of beautiful independent boutique shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants dotted around the picturesque town. The place really comes alive during its Christmas market with a visit from Father Christmas, live music and carols from the local school, and exhibitors include some of the finest food and drink, crafts and gifts from around Cornwall.

Walks along romantic empty beaches, anytime

Or for something a little simpler, just enjoy a gentle stroll on one of Cornwall’s many beautiful beaches, which are always a little magical during the quieter times of the year.

Followed by hot chocolates laced with rum
There is no better place to experience all of these magical, festive highlights than from the comfort of our coastal hotel, especially when you’re sipping a hot chocolate on our Winter Romance Break.
