With a long-standing love of contemporary art and design, we at Bedruthan are always on the look out for new designers, artisans and craftspeople. We’d love to introduce you to Tom Raffield and his beautiful contemporary lighting and furniture that is designed and crafted in his studios in the heart of the Cornish woodlands…
Exploring the traditional craft of steam bending wood, Tom Raffield and his team have ventured where no woodworker has dared to go before them. They have mastered their art so distinctively all that is left to do is be amazed by their designs.
Based in the Trevarno Valley, West Cornwall Tom Raffield design and make beautiful lighting and furniture using the age-old method of steam-bending wood. Tom became familiar with this process, which is traditionally used to make clinker boats, whilst studying at university in Falmouth. He was amazed how ecologically sound the method was and fascinated by the seemingly impossible curves he could create. He has not looked back since.
Tom seeks inspiration from both forms found in nature and the breath taking Cornish landscape and his artistic impressions have culminated into a distinctive range of lighting and furniture designs. Much of the work the team also undertake is bespoke, the most recent being a bench for the Royal bank of Canada Show Garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
The Tom Raffield team are advocates of sustainability and the brand is internationally recognised as being a pioneer of the ecological age. When not using wood from their own woodland, they source FSC timber from the most local supplier as possible. No nasty glues or chemicals are used in the production of the products and all waste is used on site in any way that it can be. This year alone Tom Raffield has won the Grand Designs Green Hero award.
