During this two day course you will learn how to make a free hand machine embroidered item from start to finish. Recently described by Kirsty Allsop as “the crack cocaine of craft”! Free hand machine embroidery is a really fun technique that’s incredibly rewarding.
New dates coming soon!
Poppy will take you through the basics of free hand embroidery, using off cuts and scraps to play until you feel confident to move onto putting your stitching on a ‘thing’! She will then take you through choosing fabrics, designing a product - maybe a tea cosy or a bag or something little like a book mark. Poppy will have templates but you can also free style and make something completely different.
You will be working with drawings, photographs and objects to create an image to stitch onto your product so it would be a good idea to bring any inspiring images with you. When you’ve drawn your image on paper Poppy will take you through the stages of transferring it into stitch.
She will be on hand to trouble shoot and advise as you get to grips with stitching your picture onto the fabric, adding a bit of appliqué and discovering your own style. She will then be able to assist as you stitch your item together and finish it off.
Poppy will bring 6 of her old Singers to the course but it is advisable to bring your own machine if you can as that’s the machine you’ll be working on once you get home so you may as well get the relationship off to a good start – this technique requires a lot of harmony between you and your machine!
Alongside the machines, scissors, iron, paper, embroidery hoops etc will be provided as well as fabric although you can feel free to bring any special fabric, found or vintage bits you’d like to use.
You won’t be an expert after this weekend but you should leave with a good grasp of the basics and something lovely that you have made all by yourself. If you’re unlucky you’ll get completely addicted and end up with stitcher’s arm, stitcher’s neck, stitcher’s back and a house so full of fabric you can’t find the cat…!
