What we do

As a family friendly hotel in a fantastic natural environment, we care about the world and what we do and what we will pass on to our children. With this in mind we aim to make Bedruthan as environmentally friendly as possible.

We ask guests to help us by recycling newspapers, magazines, cans and plastic bottles using the bins provided around the hotel. Behind the scenes we reuse and recycle a wide variety of items including paper, card, glass, printer cartridges, electronic equipment, batteries, CDs, furniture, linen, and even wine bottle corks.

As well as recycling used materials, we have solar panels to help heat the pools, water saving equipment installed, and we monitor our energy usage daily to help us reduce our carbon footprint. Low energy lighting has been installed nearly everywhere, as have light sensors in the public cloakrooms. Guests can help by removing their key cards from the light activation system when they are not in their room to save even more energy.

Bedruthan are currently trialing the Real Nappy Kit supplied to us by the Cornwall Real Nappy Project. Guests are free to use the kit which includes cloth nappies suitable for any age, soaking bucket and detergent. There are also facilities on site for you to wash your real nappy. We would be delighted to hear your comments on the use of real nappies.

In our restaurant, as well as making best use of local seasonal produce in our menus, we are moving away from individually packaged items such as jams and sugars and are replacing them with delicious locally made produce presented in refillable containers. We use biodegradable straws and unbleached chlorine-free napkins. Our kitchen deliveries arrive in reusable crates, and we have a composting area where garden and kitchen waste is sent to be turned into natural fertiliser for our plants and flowers.

Outside of the hotel, certain parts of the grounds have been left to grow into wild flower areas to encourage local wildlife such as butterflies, moths, lizards and small mammals. Many of these creatures are becoming scarce and we are hoping to increase the local population. The children's clubs take part in nature trails and environmental awareness activities, and enjoy arts and crafts using recycled materials. Our aim is that our children will encourage all of us to look after the world for future generations.

Bedruthan was the first hotel in the UK to employ a full time Sustainability Manager to oversee all of our environmental initiatives. As well as ensuring that here at the hotel we are reducing our impact on our surroundings, our Sustainability Manager also speaks to students and other hotels and businesses in the local community to share our knowledge. We are working together to make Cornwall a more environmentally responsible place to visit.

We hope you will join us in trying to make Bedruthan an environmentally friendly hotel. We have thought of some new ways in which you can help us:

  • Please don't leave the tap running when you brush your teeth
  • Switch off your lights when you leave your bedroom
  • Spend a day of your holiday ‘car free'
  • Visit our green area on the Mezzanine floor and give us your ideas on how we can do more to reduce, re-use and recycle!

Thank you for doing your bit!

Emma, Debbie and Rebecca
